KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Tan Sri Annuar Musa today condemned those who spewed racial messages during last week’s red shirt rally and urged the authorities to take immediate action by arresting all those guilty of such an offence.
The Umno Supreme Council leader said that those who promote racism should be appropriately punished.
“Those people are subjected to the law and action must be taken. Arrest them! It is simple,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Majlis Amanah Rakyat’s (MARA) headquarters today.
The MARA chairman maintained, however, that organisers of the rally last week had nothing to do with the racial slurs, claiming they came from “specific individuals with their own agenda”.
“Nobody is above the law, those who break the law must be answerable for it. But that has got nothing to do with Perhimpunan Rakyat Bersatu. It is by their own,” he added.Annuar also said most Malays are not racist and in fact belong to the most tolerant of all races.
“The most accommodative race is the Malay race. Because all Malays and Muslims take care of all as equal. Muslims behaviour is guided by religion.
“They are Muslims. Muslims are not extremist. There is no place for extreme chauvinism. Let us stop it. Let us not play up the racial sentiment. Let us instead focus on fostering national unity,” Annuar Musa pleaded.
During the #Merah169 rally on September 16, Annuar admitted that he, along with the “Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu” were “racist” in nature, but insisted that this was still in line with Islamic teachings.
He maintained that acting in defence of Malay honour was permitted in Islam so long as other races were not oppressed in the process.
This led to calls for the Malaysian Islamic authorities to take action against him for depicting Islam as amenable to racism.
The #Merah169 rally was marred by sporadic incidents of racism, primarily featuring the phrase “Cina babi”.
