“The anti-Semanjung groups have been spreading words on social media asking the Chinese not to come to this Lantern Festival because they said I am racist and anti-Chinese. That is not true,” he said, when officiating the Kuching South City Council-Federation of Chinese Associations Lantern Festival at the Friendship Park here.
“I see this festival is well-attended not only by the Chinese but also other communities in Sarawak,” he said.Zahid said the Lantern Festival is a part of Malaysian culture, not just the culture of the Chinese.
“So do not listen to anti-Semanjung groups. We are all the same,” he said.
He said the ones who actually divided the people are from narrow-minded non-governmental organisations.
He said there are no differences among the various communities in Malaysia, though they come from different religions and racial backgrounds as evident from the people who attended the festival.
