KUALA LUMPUR: The government will not bow to attempts to overthrow it through efforts to discredit it in the eyes of the world, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said tonight.
Najib said the government was determined to ensure the people’s fears on national issues were allayed.
“The government has explained these national issues. But that is not good enough,” he said, before launching the new Yayasan Pewaris Batu building here.
Najib said protests such as Bersih 4, which was held on the eve of Merdeka Day, was not unlawful, but attempting to overthrow the government was, and also called on the people to understand the situation.
“Once every 5 years, we leave our fate in the hands of the people. This is democracy, not ‘demo-crazy’ people looking to overthrow a valid government through street protests,” he said.
“It is the attempt to overthrow the government that was democratically elected that is unconstitutional.”
Najib said the government had said time was needed to find solutions to the economic situation, but the circumstances had been used against it.
“These are matters beyond our control, which have resulted in the drop in value of the ringgit. But still, it is not yet as bad as it was during the 1997 Asian economic crisis, but even that we managed to steer ourselves out of.”He recapped the measures taken by the government in 1998 to counter the economic crisis, and called on the people to unite and support the measures implemented.
“Back then, if you remember how we managed to get out of that situation, it was through support and trust in the government,” he said.
“People didn’t react by trying to overthrow the government then, so, why should that be the case now?”
