KOTA KINABALU, Oct 7 — Seven men were arrested here for trafficking 11 Filipinas, during an anti-vice operation early this morning at two separate locations.
Sabah commissioner of police Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said that police raided an apartment unit in Beverly Hills, Penampang, and a budget hotel nearby after a tip-off from the Philippine embassy notifying them of a possible human trafficking case of sex exploitation.
“After some investigation, a special team identified the locations of the possible offence and raided the locations at 12.15am,” he said in a statement here today.
Police nabbed a 29-year-old man who was watching over the six Filipinas aged 22 to 36 years at the apartment.
At the budget hotel, police arrested six men, aged between 20 and 39 years and some who were believed to sex customers, and five Filipinas aged 24 to 34 years.
All the men were West Malaysians.Police said that the suspects were being investigated under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which carries an imprisonment term of not less than three years and not exceeding 15 years or fine, upon conviction.
“All the victims are currently under the care of the Welfare Department’s shelter while the case is ongoing,” said Jalaluddin.
