Azmaniera Jisamani, 19, a student from City College said she spent RM200 a month on average on public transportation.
“I spend RM6 daily for transportation as I live in Cheras and travel to my campus in Petaling Jaya,” she said.
Azmaniera suggested the government introduce flat rates for students using public transportation, be it bus, monorail or LRT.”This is practiced in other countries. Students are given flat rates when they travel using public transportation,” she said.
Ah Shi Ming, 19, a student from Brickfields Asia College in Kuala Lumpur, said she spent close to RM100 monthly.
“Since I live near my college, it is cheaper. But on weekends when I go out with my friends, I need to spend a little more,” she said, explaning she is from outstation and spends her weekend exploring the city.
She suggested the government reintroduce student passes.
“A few years ago, all students could apply for the student concession card, which gives them a flat rate of RM100 per month, and they could use it for any destination on any mode of public transport,” she said.
Prince Robert Rajendran Dudley, 33, a system analyst in Phileo Damansara, said he spent an average of RM200 a month for transportation.
“I spend an average of RM5 a day for transport, but if I need to head to the heart of Kuala Lumpurthat would cost me a little more,” he said. The present fares are manageable for him, but he urged the government to be stern on the frequency of public transportation.
“They could get more buses or train more drivers on other bus routes so they do not have to stick to one route.
“If you look at some routes, they have so many drivers with a high frequency of buses. But on others, with only four drivers, the frequency is low,” he said.
Noor Mah Baharom, 53, a clerk who travels on buses and trains daily, said the fares are still manageable.
“I spend an average of RM6 a day on transportation and I think the fares are quite cheap,” she said.
Noor suggested the government bring back the travel passes for frequent travellers as they would have a flat rate for all modes of public transportation.
“In 2007, they use to have flat rate passes where travellers would only pay RM150 and they could use any mode of public transportation to any destination in the Klang Valley,” she said.
