Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos told delegates in his speech at the division meeting here that the country’s former prime minister had “contaminated” his own reputation by attending the giant rally that had gained strong support from the predominantly Chinese opposition DAP.
“We heard that Tun attended the Bersih 4 rally. I am sure many of us here look up to him who is a legend for ruling Malaysia for 22 years,” Jamal said, referring to Dr Mahathir by his honorific.
“Unfortunately, he chose to assemble in the rally with the Chinese from DAP. We really respect Tun, but we are highly disappointed and regret that he supports DAP at Dataran Merdeka yesterday,” he added.

Dr Mahathir had unexpectedly showed up in the streets near Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur late yesterday evening and was mobbed by Bersih 4 ralliers eager to get up-close-and personal with the 90-year-old retired leader who has been a vocal critic of the Najib adminstration.
A few hours earlier, Dr Mahathir had delivered a speech in Pasir Gudang, Johor encouraging Malaysians to show the strength of their “people power” against the government, claiming that the country’s legal system had been violated.
