The man responded to the woman's calls
for help after she ran into trouble while
taking an afternoon swim in the western
port of Paphos one of the Mediterranean
island's main tourists attractions.

police said the 63-years old man was
able to bring her to the shore ,but lost
consciousness himself soon after
administering first aid to her.

The 64-year old woman was taken to
a Paphos clinic but was pronounced
dead on arrived.

A post mortem would be carried out
on Wednesday to ascertain the cause
of the death of both Britons whose
identities have yet to be announced.

Paphos is notorious for it strong currents
