GEORGE TOWN, Oct 6 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today urged police to take action over a false tweet purportedly of him telling critics to leave the state if they disagreed with the new rules on the use of loudspeakers by mosques here.
Lim previously denied that he issued the tweet, which was shared across social media platforms.
“I hope the police will investigate and take action against those behind this as I’ve made so many reports and no action have been taken for those reports,” he told reporters at his office after giving his statement to the police.
Lim’s political secretary Wong Hon Wai lodged a police report over the false tweet last week. The DAP secretary-general today expressed doubt that police will pursue those responsible for the tweet, citing their previous inaction over reports he lodged including one against Kota Baru division head Datuk Mohd Fatmi Che Salleh who burned effigies of him and his father Lim Kit Siang last month.
He added that all these attacks against him, his subsequent police reports and the police’s alleged inaction have all become like a “show”.
Controversy erupted in Penang after it was announced that loudspeakers in mosques and suraus would be restricted to only broadcasting the azan or Muslim call to prayer.
Following uproar among Muslims, Lim pointed out that the decision was made by the Penang Mufti, Penang Islamic Affairs Council and the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department.
