AWOL policeman nabbed with drugs

PETALING JAYA, Jan 10 — A policeman, who had been absent without leave for the last six months, was arrested with an accomplice and drugs in a stolen vehicle at a hotel parking lot in Jalan Maharajalela on Thursday.
The officer, 25, and his accomplice, 24, had in their possesion 911g of heroin, 19 Eramin 5 pills and three small packets of amphetamines during the 2am bust.
City CID chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said the suspect was a policeman supposedly still in service, while his accomplice had no criminal record.
Police were trying to establish if the huge amount of drugs found on the suspects were meant for distribution.
“We will be screening the mobile phones that were seized to establish if a network of drug users were in contact with the suspected rogue officer,” he said.
The suspects were brought to the Dang Wangi police headquarters for initial investigations where they are remanded. Zainuddin said the officer has since been suspended of all duties.
He said the suspects were using a car that was reportedly stolen in Brickfields sometime ago.
“We believe the suspect changed the car number plates in the hope of evading attention of other police officers, while he got himself involved in illegal activities.
“Usually, the officers are able to recognise number plates that are registered under the police force, and on this occasion, police found something amiss about the suspect’s car,” he said.
Zainuddin said the car was registered under the police force, and not personally under the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), as some reports had earlier claimed.
“When a number plate is registered under the force, it automatically becomes the responsibility of the IGP as he is the head,” he said.  MALAY MAIL  ONLINE
