KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today gave his assurance on the accountability over the investigation into 1Malaysia Development Bhd currently being carried out by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Najib said questions pertaining to the 1MDB issue, along with the RM2.6 billion donation from Saudi royal family, would be answered as he was "responsible to the people".
"The Opposition will take advantage (of the issues) all the time but the facts of our achievement are more important. This means, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in our country is increasing... our economic achievement is among the highest in the world.
"These are the issues being publicised in an organised or an orchestrated manner, but we will give answers as I am responsible to the people.“We will leave it to the PAC to decide on 1MDB (investigation), while there is also due process for the RM2.6 billion (case) which is being done by the relevant authorities," he said in reply to a supplementary question by Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara).
Najib had earlier told the Dewan Rakyat that Asean had taken various steps to reduce and abolish import duties, as well as to liberalise the services and investment sectors.
"The initiatives, among others, include abolishing duties on 96 per cent of products while the remaining will see the abolishment of duties on Jan 1, 2018, and the liberalisation of the service sector which consists of 100 sub-sectors," he said.
He said the formation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) had contributed to an increase in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of US$4,136 (RM17,104.22) in 2014, compared to US$2,308 (RM9,544.62) in 2007.Najib said the inflow of investment into Asean have increased with US$136 billion (RM562.42 billion) in 2014, compared to US$128 billion (RM529.34 billion) in China.
"Malaysia is among the main investors among Asean countries, where companies have invested in banking, commodities, hotel and tourism, aviation, manufacturing, and utility and infrastructure. Intra-Asean investments have also increased, with a total of US$2.77 billion (RM11.46billion) invested in 2014," he added.
