KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin cautioned wing members today against participating in Sunday’s “Save Malaysia” rally that seeks to oust party president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from office.
Anyone found to have attended the event will face disciplinary action, he added
“We are a free country, you can do whatever you want if you don’t break the law. You’re free to do what you want.
“For our members, they are not free to do what they want. They must follow what I say. If they go to this rally, we will take disciplinary action,” he told a press conference in Umno headquarters here.
Khairy also reiterated that the party was against the campaign led by former leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad because it was undemocratic.
“Our decision today is the same as the statement we made the other day. We oppose this because it is against the country’s political system.
“Our political system is based on parliamentary democracy. That mandate is still with Najib and Barisan Nasional,” he added.
The rally mooted by former minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim is to gather Najib’s critics for a show of force to pressure the prime minister into resigning over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad and the RM2.6 billion political donation issues.
The rally at a Shah Alam stadium is to feature Dr Mahathir as the keynote speaker alongside several opposition politicians and activists including Bersih 2.0’s Maria Chin Abdullah and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.File picture shows Minister of Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin holding a press conference in Putrajaya, March 21, 2016. — Bernama pic
