RM1 kopi O

KOTA KINABALU:Customers come first at a coffee shop in the Kepayan Low-Cost Housing area near here. For this reason, Kedai Kopi Vin Lap has kept the price of its kopi O, or black coffee, at RM1.
In a state where most coffee shops sell the beverage at between RM1.50 and RM2.50, the simple family-run outlet can be considered a rarity.
It is not surprising why the coffee shop remains popular with patrons from government, corporate offices and a church nearby.
Owner Connie Loi, 39, said her father-in-law opened the shop in 1997 and kopi O was 90 sen then.
“When my husband and I took over the business in 2009, the price was raised to RM1, but we maintain the price because it is a popular drink among customers. The profit is not much, but we sell other food and drinks.”
Other items sold at RM1 are a serving of banana fritters, traditional cakes and plain fried noodles.
The shop serves dry noodles or curry noodles at RM6 each, but in a bigger portion compared with most shops.Marvin Felix, 39, a regular, said the shop was the choice for his family and friends.
“When I was a student in the 1990s, Vin Lap used to be the only restaurant in Kepayan. Today, although the price has increased slightly, it is still cheap as the portion is big,” said Marvin, who was having breakfast with his son.
