KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 ― Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today demanded an explanation from Umno on his alleged transgressions to the party after secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s claim that he may face disciplinary action.
Muhyiddin said Tengku Adnan’s remarks were dubious as Umno's disciplinary board has not directly informed him that he had breached party rules.
"Rightfully, I should be given a show cause letter which details the basis for the accusation against me. I should also be given a grace period to reply to all the allegations and explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against me.
"However, based on the Umno secretary-general's statement, all these procedures were not observed by the disciplinary board," Muhyiddin said in a statement issued on his Facebook page today.Tengku Adnan yesterday said that Muhyiddin, who is also ex-deputy prime minister, as well as former Kedah mentri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir should ideally be booted from the party.
The Putrajaya MP said that the duo were both facing action for appearing on a opposition platform.
Tengku Adnan however stressed, that the decision now lies in the hands of the party’s Supreme Council, which will meet soon on the matter.
“We got the report already on TS Muhyiddin and Mukhriz. We will table it back to Supreme Council to decide. The disciplinary committee has put it back to the Supreme Council to decide,” he told reporters when met at the Parliament yesterday.
“To me, I would have sacked them a long time ago,” Tengku Adnan added.
Muhyiddin, however, claimed that Tengku Adnan’s statement in itself indicated that there may have been a violation of Umno’s Constitution.
"I was directly involved in the formation of Umno disciplinary board when I chaired the Umno Constitutional Amendment Committee in 2000.
"The spirit behind the formation of the independent board was based on the principle that all Umno members who are brought to face the board would receive fair treatment and will be given the right to defend themselves in line with the principles of natural justice.
"Therefore, I urge the Umno Disciplinary Board to explain the actual position of the said report against me, as stated by the Umno secretary-general. I reserve the rights to know the basis for the accusation against me and defend myself before any action is taken," he added.MALAY MAIL  ONLINE
