PUTRAJAYA, May 13 — The Citizens’ Declaration calling for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation has been signed by over one million people, the Save Malaysia movement announced today.
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, a former prime minister who is also the spokesman for the bipartisan group behind the petition, said that 1.271 million signatures have been collected, out of which 1.07 million were done online and another 200,000 signatures on printed forms.
“We are still collecting more forms. And all these signatures are verified. We have rejected some 253,000 forms already,” he told a press conference here that was attended by most of the prominent figures who were the initial signatories of the Citizens’ Declaration launched last March.
Dr Mahathir stressed that the Save Malaysia secretariat rejected signatures that did not contain IC numbers or those where IC numbers and names did not correspond. He also said that he would be taking pictures of the signed documents and presenting them to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The stack of documents is quite big. It’s difficult for me to bring everything, so I will be taking pictures of them and bring them to the Istana (Palace).
“I have not set an audience with the Agong but I hope they allow me in,” said the elder statesman.
Dr Mahathir the petition demonstrated the amount of people who rejected Najib’s leadership.
He also claimed that some people were “threatened” into not signing the Citizens’ Declaration and said the movement still has other strategies in the event the petition fails to lead to Najib’s removal.
“We have not failed yet. But even if that happens, we have other strategies that we don’t wish to discuss now,” he said. MALAY MAIL ONLINE
